Outdoor Adventure

The Dominican Republic has the most varied climate in the Antilles archipelagoes, and the highest mountain range in the whole West Indies, which means it has something for everyone when it comes to outdoor adventure and discovery, from hikes and waterfalls, to caving and  rafting, to mountain climbing, ziplining, and much more!  In other words, plenty of opportunities to get outdoors, get your adrenaline going, and discover the local wildlife and vegetation, here are just a few of the exciting things you can try.

The 27 Charcos of Damajagua outside of Puerto Plata, is a top spot to visit.  It’s a great place to hike, swim, and enjoy the 27 magical waterfalls along the river Damajagua, and conveniently located near this major city.

If you like canyoning and rappelling, you can also do this in the 27 Waterfalls, or discover other locations in Puerto Plata like Magic Mushroom, Charcos de los Militares, and Diguapa Falls. You can also find rappelling options in Jarabacoa’s Salto de Baiguate waterfall, and in Samaná at El Limón Waterfall.

For high adrenaline White Water Rafting experience, check out the Yaque del Norte River in Jarabaco where you can take tours along the longest river in the Caribbean. Or get up in the air and try paragliding here, or in the nearby Constanza Valley and take in the views from the sky.

Cave expeditions are also in abundance in every part of the island nation, accessible from Puerto Plata, Rio San Juan, Samana, Monte Plata, Punta Cana, San Pedro, Santo Domingo, Brahona, and Jimani.  Many caves include petroglyphs from the early island inhabitants – one of the best of which is in Los Haitises National Park. Caves vary in difficulty, but you’re sure to find something that meets your fitness and skill level.

If recreational parks are you thing, or if you have kids travelling with you, consider visiting Puerto Plata’s Ocean World, or Monkey Jungle to take in some wildlife, or enjoy fun outdoor sports at Wild Play Adventures. Over in Punta Cana, you can explore wildlife at Monkey Land, Seaquarium, Manatee Park, Dolphin Island Park, or Dolphin Explorer. Or enjoy high adrenaline sports like zip lining, flight simulators and more at Bavaro Adventure Park, water sports at Rad Park, or a combination of ziplining, horseback riding, and more at Scape Park.

You can also find ziplining in Samana, Barahona and Jarabacoa.
